With the advent of downloads and streaming and falling sales of singles, the chart is not what it used to be. Back in the day – to have a No.1 single meant you were the subject of every teenage conversation and it could bring great wealth. Nowadays N0.1s can come and go without ever entering general popular knowledge. But it still gives an indication of what songs and artists are making a mark.

The charts began in 1952 and has been compiled ever since.

Every week the new top 40 is announced on BBC Radio 1 at 4pm on Friday afternoons.

It is compiled from physical sales, streams and downloads.

The company responsible for it is the Official Chart Company.

We keep an eye on the chart and ensure that this music is available, should you want it for your jukebox party hire.
